  Goal

We are a trying to improve Bar Mitzvah Parsha learning. Our goal is to have a student read into his phone and the phone will point out the trope and pronunciation errors which will guide him to a perfect laining. In order to train our Neural Network to be able to do this we need lots of data. With your help we can make this happen. To help, please upload a perfect laining of the first aliya of Parshat Bereshit. Your recordings will only be shared with our team and our computers. Thank you.

Final Report

We are a trying to improve Bar Mitzvah Parsha learning. Our goal is to have a student read into his phone and the phone will point out the trope and pronunciation errors which will guide him to a perfect laining. In order to train our Neural Network to be able to do this we need lots of data. Our program is based off of TensorFlow's audio recognition algorithm, which is described here: https://www.tensorflow.org/versions/master/tutorials/audio_recognition

We asked various students to lain the Rosh Chodesh aliyot before spending time to chop down their recordings into shorter time segments. Since our program is not yet finished, we discovered that taking on large projects can take longer to finish than we first thought. In addition, neural network machine learning requires a lot of training data, which can take a while to collect.

As a team of high school kids, we learned to be independent, with minimal help from our teacher, when working towards a goal. We learned to solve problems or complications that aroused through the process of collecting data and overall finishing our project. This project has taught us to be our best advocates and to write persuasively. We were forced to communicate with each other as this project involved teamwork and collaboration. We worked well as a group and recognized others opinions, while make responsible decisions.

When we were younger and less knowledgeable, our teachers guided us through homeworks and helped us tremendously, but as we have gotten older, most of our homework and classwork has been student guided and student learned. When we worked on this project, we endeavored to solve all problems without teacher help and asked for guidance when needed. We felt comfortable leading the project without the teacher because we have all successfully completed independent projects in the past with minimal teacher assistance. The aspect of less teacher guidance will continue to better prepare us for projects and jobs in the real world where there will be no teacher to assist us and carry us to the finish line.
